Tidbit Tuesday #8

It's Tuesday!! Well, for a little while longer anyway.  They do say, better late than never. :)

Todays "tidbit" is more of a "what NOT to do" than a tidbit, but still, quite useful and it may save some of you the aggravation I endured.

A girl on my team at the office is having a baby in a few months and we are hosting a baby shower for her tomorrow. How could I pass up the opportunity to make a baby quilt, especially since she is having a little girl.

I knew right away, I wanted to use Soiree for Moda. I used 1/2 of a jelly roll (cut all the strips in half), strip pieced 5 strips then cut them 4.5" wide to make the coins 4" x 2" finished, 2" finished sashing and the border is made up of 2" finished squares (cut from same strips pieced pieces. Just cut 2.5"). Easy peasy. Right? Almost....

Mind you, it wasn't the actual assembly that was difficult. That WAS easy!! The issue came in when I put it together to quilt it. I knew the backing I had would be a snug fit but what I didn't realize is how much the quilt top can shift as you are quilting. Or at least for me.  I was chugging along and got to the last 4 or 5 lines of quilting and happened to flip the corner over and saw that my backing was about 2" too short and just in one corner.

I wanted to cry. I had to get it done since the shower is tomorrow and there was no way I could make this quilt again in time, but how could I fix this?

I ended up trimming the edges all the way around to where it would still look cute and not ruin the look of the quilt but I still had this...
Tip #7 Too short
It was just under 1/2 of an inch so I hoped the binding would cover it....and it DID! Pshew!

Here is how it turned out...flubbed up and all. :)
Tinker Coin Quilt
Do you see that outside white border that is about 1/2"? That should have been 2" just like the sashing. I still think it's cute though and if I never said anything, no one would have been the wiser.

However, the morale of this story...errr....tip....is always always always make sure you have plenty of room on each side of your backing compared to where your quilt top lies. Even if you think you'll make it by an inch or so, you need more. Don't get caught in the same conundrum as I did. :)

My second tip...also a what not to do....

Make sure you have enough thread to quilt your quilt, especially when you are on a deadline. Not only to make sure you can finish it if you need to, but if you had to go get another spool, the colours may not be exactly the same.

This spool had me awfully worried as I was nearing the end... lol
Tip #7 Thread

After all this stress, I sure hope she likes it.

Much Love!!!

  1. Love the quilt! You're right, no one would have noticed that there had been adjustments. Thank you for sharing. It seems like all I see on blogs are the beautiful finished quilts, but never the boo-boos. As a beginning quilter it makes me feel better to know that even the experienced quilters have problems sometimes!

  2. Your quilt if wonderful! I am sure she will love it! Who will know you cut some off.. I know we won't tell...I'll guarantee there are lots of quilters out there who have made adjustments in one way or another....

  3. Is that why they tell you to have 3 inches beyond your top?? Seriously... I thought it was just for sending it off to the quilter to quilt. So, I never thought about it AND I have only finished a couple of quilts and haven't had to think about it.

Also, I think the way your quilt ended up looks better than if it would have had 2". It draws your eyes all around the quilt now whereas I think it would have just made you look at the middle.

Thanks for sharing your flubs... As I am just getting started, it really helps. I thought I could learn on my own, but I realize that I learn from everyone else's mistakes and triumphs. I haven't attended classes but I have some great blogs (yours included :))to learn from.

  6. I think it's still super cute! Also, I had the same thing happen to me on the pinwheel sampler quilt, but mine didn't work out so great. I just added a quilt label to cover my little boo boo. ;)

  7. I think it is beautiful! I love your honesty....l always think I am the only one who ends up with these boo boos. I was told once by a professional quilter it is part of the process and we are suppose to enjoy our quilting and learn from it all. I am sure she will love it and never know any different.

  8. Serendipity! Because it really looks great with the narrow outer border - but I personally wouldn't have thought of making a narrow outer border without the boo boo! It really makes the quilt design something special and uniquely yours!

And I hear you on running out of thread - I've started repurposing my serger thread because it's almost impossible to run out of it, there's so much on the spools!!

  9. Running out of thread is one of my biggest fears! But it's happened more than once. I get so caught up in buying the fabric that it's tough to focus attention/money on thread. I guess it is necessary. The coin quilt looks perfect!!

  10. She will LOVE it. I did the same thing on one of my first quilts and never forgot the lesson I learned.

  15. Quilt came out great despite you little mistake. I fortunately have never had the backing shortage happen but have had not enough thread thing happen, fortunately I was lucky enough to have a back up.

  16. Ohhhhh.....again! I love your quilts!!! I think I like the little strip of sashing around the edge better than a thicker one anyways.

(secretly wising that was my quilt...lol) I want all the quilts I see online, is that bad?
